Hi Yoon-hee,

It's not the easiest job that's for sure! I think the best thing you can do is to be sincere, that is very appreciated. Some tips are to be patient yet persistent and get to know the buyer, some will want you to drop in with a bag others will ask you to make appointments, find out what they prefer. Take notes on what you pour for them so that you can follow up later and also be sure that you do not bring them the same thing over and over if they do not like it! Also it's useful to really get to know their program. I cannot tell you how many reps who used to sell me wine would have no clue what my wine list contained. Many of them did not know my menu either. I think spending some time in the account is often appreciated. That doesn't mean you have to spend a ton of money but sitting at the bar and grabbing an appetizer and a glass of wines shows you are investing in getting to know the program, study the list, ask questions, get to know the bartender. All these things can be really helpful! Of course you should also know what you are selling so study hard and get to know the products you are working with. Good luck and keep at it! The passion you have for wine is the first step, now it just takes a little time and perseverance and you should do great.

I am so glad that I found your web and blog site. I am very new at this wine rep. title and work with, ext.. I am not doing very good at getting an appointments with stores and restaurants. Today, I just typed (google) "how to be a good wine sales rep.?" and your web was one of many. I really need lots of help and I am also esl speaker, so my non-native English speaking does not help. I really love wine and everything comes with it. What can I do?

I have definitely fallen under Nantucket's "spell"! I have found some really great places, but funny thing is that I am usually on island in the swing season, not when it's at its height so I like a lot of the smaller places that stay open year round. I have been missing the Lobster Trap desperately for a splurge, you can also hit the Company of the Cauldron, two great spots, and Topper's at the Wauwinet if you are there in the season. For off season Lola 41 is hard to beat for their 2 for 1 sushi rolls on Sundays off-season. I hit Corazon del Mar this October before they closed, great food and margaritas and of course the standard Black Eyed Susan's! If you are out of town definitely stop by the Downey Flake for some of the best pancakes around! They just got a listed in Travel & Leisure as one of America's best pancakes! Happy dining!

Dear Rebecca,

Every year I go to Nantucket, too! I love it for it's captivating beauty and great restaurants! Do you suggest any really good restaurants I could visit next time I go? I think the reason why everybody keeps returning to the island is the island itself!!! There must be a spell on it that pulls people back every year. Well, I hope you reply soon!! Thanks for everything!!!!
